What is a Memory Cafe?
A Memory Café is a welcoming, supportive gathering designed for individuals living with memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, or other forms of dementia along with their caregivers, family members, and loved ones. It provides a safe, relaxed environment where participants can socialize, enjoy meaningful activities, and build community without stigma or pressure.
Memory Cafés typically include light refreshments, engaging activities (such as music, crafts, games, or educational discussions), and opportunities for connection. The focus is on joy, dignity, and fostering a sense of belonging for everyone involved.
Our Memory Cafés incorporate principles from the Dementia Friendly America initiative, which promotes dementia-friendly communities. Being dementia-friendly means creating spaces that are inclusive, respectful, and supportive of individuals living with cognitive changes. This includes trained staff, clear communication, welcoming environments, and an understanding approach that empowers individuals to remain engaged and valued members of the community.
Together, Memory Cafés and dementia-friendly practices help reduce isolation, provide caregiver support, and promote understanding within the broader community.
