Bill Campbell began his pitching career with the Minnesota Twins organization and was called up to the majors in 1973. The 6 ‘3 right-hander was awarded the Relief Pitcher of the Year Award in 1976. Bill signed a five year contract with the Boston Red Sox and again won the Relief Pitcher of the Year Award in 1977. Also in 1977 Bill was selected for the American League All-Star Team. In 1982 Bill signed with the Chicago Cubs and went on to pitch for the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals where he was part of their World Series team, Detroit Tigers and Montreal Expos. Bill pitched in 700 major league games over 15 seasons, (1973-1987). All but nine of his appearances were in relief. Bill posted career numbers of 83 wins, 68 losses, 126 saves and an earned run average of 3.54. Since retiring from playing professional baseball Bill began a career as a professional baseball pitching coach and instructor working for the Milwaukee Brewer and St. Louis Cardinal organizations. In 2002 Bill retired from professional baseball and became a volunteer pitching coach for his son’s high school baseball team. Bill continues his baseball involvement by staying active in Major League Baseball Alumni Association.
Bill Campbell was also one of four major league ball players in history to have served in Vietnam.
